I love mushrooms. I have always had my favorite grilled food is thick and juicy Portobello mushrooms, and their favorite pizza is…one of the kids of mushroom pizza. Strange? Maybe. But I am very young.

Now, as a functional medicine nutritionist, I am happy to discuss with people how to include various nutritious foods in their diets in a healthy way (not burnt on the grill or pizza like when I was a child), functional Mushrooms are good because they are rich in important immune and brain support substances, including dietary fiber and plant protein9.

1. Lion’s mane (Hericium)

The lion’s mane is an important mushroom for brain and immune health.It has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for at least 1000 years and is used regularly in cuisines all over the world1 piece. 2. Lingzhi (Lingzhi)

Like other mushrooms in dexterous mushrooms, Ganoderma lucidum contains a high content of glucan, but it also contains a unique substance called triterpenes that can enhance its immune function.Triterpenoids promote the necessary inflammatory response in the presence of pathogens, thereby triggering an immune response15.More specifically, a meta-analysis of clinical trial studies concluded that Ganoderma can enhance the activity of T helper cells and other immune cells derived from the thymus, thereby enhancing our immunity6.It is also found that Ganoderma can enhance the activity of NGF and BDNF growth factors, so it has the potential to improve human brain health and immunity6.

3.Shiitake (Shiitake)

Shiitake mushrooms have been used as a medicinal food for thousands of years and are a good source of vegetarian protein4. Shiitake has been shown to maintain healthy triglyceride and cholesterol levels, partly because it has a high fiber content and contains alpha and beta glucans, including coumarins. Lentinan is a glucan that promotes a healthy inflammatory response and may have the effect of improving mood3, 15, 24.

In addition, shiitake mushrooms also contain a powerful antioxidant called ergothionine (ET).Studies have found that the human digestive tract has a special transporter specifically designed to absorb ET. Although it is not completely clear, it shows that this antioxidant is essential to human health7.

4.Turkey tail (Variegated Camellia/Yunzhi)

The mushroom contains two β-glucan polysaccharides, each of which has undergone extensive immune research: polysaccharide K (PSK) and polysaccharide peptide (PSP)11. Both can activate the early warning system in the immune system, and enhance the response and proliferation of a variety of immune cells to pathogens.But PSK and PSP can also be used as important human antioxidants, and have shown beneficial effects on the digestive system, liver, heart, and joints in animal studies.6, 11.

In addition to producing energy, adenosine also supports the regulation of the functions of our organ systems, so it may not be surprising that the brain has multiple receptor sites dedicated to adenosine.The nucleoside is known to help regulate sleep, breathing, cardiovascular function and liver/kidney function10, 18.

Sample use: Divide dry cordyceps into boiling water. Cook for 15 minutes to release beneficial substances. It can be used as a tea with lemon and ginger (if needed), or as a soup when making soup.

6. Agaricus (Agaricus blazei)
