Ahhhhhh, the great American road trip. It is a rite of passage for every family to pack their suitcases, get into the car and see something special that you cannot find at home. And while that may look a little different in 2020, there are many ways you can still travel and be safe.
Here in Fairfax County, many companies are taking extra precautions and we are ready to meet you when you are ready to travel. And because Virginia is great, destinations across the state have come together to point out road trip destinations for anyone looking to see our sights. The campaign is calledWanderLove, and a safe fall road trip to Northern Virginia is just one tank of fuel away. Here are some things you will find when you visit Fairfax County.
Fall foliage viewing
Fall foliage is just about to fall in some of the county’s most beautiful spots. It’s the perfect way to get out and about, breathe in the fresh air and let the amazing colors soothe your soul.
Craft breweries with outside terraces
One of my favorite things to do when visiting is checking out the local breweries and distilleries. I think this is a great way to experience an authentic local atmosphere and get a real good drink too. There’s nothing like coming home and telling all of your jealous friends about this “perfect” beer that they can only have if they try it for themselves. And while the weather is getting cooler, the warm autumn days make for a great atmosphere to relax with some beer and get some fresh air. Our breweries’ beer terraces are open and serve you a unique beer to go home and brag about.
Historic sites with outdoor areas
If you want to soak in some of Northern Virginia’s rich history while relaxing and staying socially aloof, we have some fantastic options for you. Our historic sites are well-appointed and have plenty of outdoor space for you to explore. Our historic sites have expanded their cleaning protocols for those comfortable enough to venture into their museums or for those who want to go inside a bit. And fall is the perfect time to see the sights, as the fall tones of the leaves make for majestic images and the perfect sweater weather makes it a breeze to spend the day on the grounds without having to worry about it gets too hot.
Fairfax County is home to two award-winning wineries, Paradise Springs and The Winery at Bull Run. Each offers unique outdoor tasting experiences that make it a lovely and relaxing environment to spend a day or evening. Each location has the option to reserve your own private space on-site so social distancing is not an issue, and each also offers dining options and entertainment to keep you full and happy. So stop by, get some drinks, and bring a bottle (or two!) Home with you.
While Fairfax County is so close to Washington, DC, we pride ourselves on the fact that we can explore tens of thousands of acres of parkland. And many of our parks have fantastic hiking opportunities, which is always a popular activity when looking for the perfect fall adventure. If you’re looking for a quick getaway to greet Mother Nature but still want all of the conveniences of an urban destination close at hand, Fairfax County is the place.
We hope to see you here this fall. If you find a special place that you think other travelers should know about, share it on your social media channels#FXVAHashtag and tag us in your post. We love to see people here having fun and we can even showcase your adventures on our own social media feeds. Stay safe, don’t forget to wear a mask or face covering indoors, and follow the current Virginia safety guidelines when traveling.
